We are located in Whittier, Alaska, approximately one hour from Anchorage, the largest city in the state. Anchorage has a many accommodation options, and booking early during the summer months is a must for assuring availability. Leave Anchorage headed south on the New Seward Highway and take the turn off to Whittier/Portage Valley after about 45 minutes.
Located about halfway between Anchorage and Whittier is the City of Girdwood. Although Girdwood is a very small community, accommodation options include the Alyeska Prince Hotel, a world class hotel, as well as numerous cozy Bed and Breakfasts. Additionally, the Portage Valley Cabins & RV Parking offers cabin rentals, campsites, and RV hookups about ten miles from Whittier. If you would like to stay in Whittier, the newly built, beautiful Inn at Whittier is an excellent choice. See the links below for more information.
Both Anchorage and Girdwood are connected to Whittier via the longest highway tunnel in North America (13,300 feet or 2.5 miles). Fifty miles southeast of Anchorage near Portage Glacier, the tunnel connects the port city of Whittier on Prince William Sound to the Seward Highway and Southcentral Alaska. It opened to vehicle traffic on June 7, 2000 after extensive conversion from a World War II railroad tunnel. Vehicle travel through this tunnel is one-way only, be sure to check the tunnel schedule for traffic openings to and from Whittier.
