Whale Bay – Ultimate 5 Day Paddle

There is only one place in the western half of Prince William Sound where you can find massive glaciers and feeding humpback whales. If you only paddle Alaska once, this is the tour for you. This itinerary is flexible to accommodate weather, ice, and whales.

Day 1

Get to Whittier
Pack gear into dry bags
Get fitted with kayaks
Water Taxi to Pt. Nowell
Set up camp
Take an afternoon paddle looking for porpoise

Day 2

Break camp
Paddle into Dangerous Passage
Explore pristine bays filled with wildlife
If time permits, paddle to a saltwater waterfall
Make camp in Dangerous Passage

Day 3

Break camp
Paddle to Gamaak Cove in Icy Bay
Visit a black-legged kittiwake nesting area
Make camp and harvest ice for evening drinks

Day 4

Paddle to Nassau Fiord to see colossal Chenega Glacier calving
Watch hundreds of seals basking on the icebergs
Return to camp

Day 5

Break camp
Paddle to Whale Bay, watching for orca and humpback whales
Explore Humpback Cove and visit an eagle’s nest
Paddle to Dualhead to get picked up by water taxi
Return to Whittier
